In short
  • OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Search, integrating real-time web search with natural-language answers and direct links to the cited sources.
  • For local and service businesses, the models select citations from public information that is accessible, fast and technically consistent in its structure.
  • Google and OpenAI point out that there are no secret codes or exclusive tags: visibility depends on answering users' real questions clearly.

How conversational search with real-time sources works

OpenAI formally announced the integration of direct web search into ChatGPT. Instead of only offering answers based on its static training knowledge, the model decides when to consult the live web according to the intent of the query, providing up-to-date information on weather, stock prices, sport, news and local businesses, with direct links to the original sources.

This format combines the naturalness of conversational dialogue with fact checking. When a user asks a question about local services or solutions, the assistant retrieves relevant pages and shows citation buttons pointing to the sites it took the details from.

“Integrated search lets users interact with the web conversationally, getting timely answers backed by visible links to authoritative sources and original publications.”

What this means for your business or practice

For a small or medium-sized business, this change doesn't mean traditional SEO is disappearing, but that clarity and technical precision carry more weight. Artificial intelligence crawlers examine pages looking for structured information, clearly broken-down services and consistent contact details.

Pages that only contain generic phrases (“we are leaders in comprehensive solutions”) are hard for these engines to interpret. On the other hand, websites that explain exactly what they do, in which city they operate, their indicative rates and how to contact them make it easier for the model to extract the right details when generating a recommendation with citations.

Technical structure and clarity versus marketing promises

Our take at MR Mentoría: optimizing for AI assistants (AEO and GEO) starts with having a clean, fast-loading website with no artificial tricks. Writing precisely and structuring business data with standard Schema.org markup (such as LocalBusiness or ProfessionalService) is the most rigorous way to make sure both people and search engines understand your commercial offer.
